Kiwanis Makes Atlas Donation to Beach School

The Fort Myers Beach Kiwanis has made a donation of World Atlases to the Beach Elementary School. The 20 atlases will be given to every 4th grade student at the school. Kiwanis Board Members Paula McCarthy and Jessica Hernstadt made the presentation to school principal Karen Manzi.

Local COVID Cases Continue To Decline

As of Monday morning there were 291 COVID-19 patients in Lee Health hospitals, 9 were children at Golisano Children’s Hospital. On September 13th there were 423 COVID cases and on September 7th there were 525 cases.

2020-2021 Budget Approved

The millage rate adopted by the Fort Myers Beach town council for the 2021-2022 budget was .9500 per $1,000 of assessed property value. That's exactly what the millage rate is for the current year but should net the town a little more revenue due to the increase in property values.

Community Policing Spiked On The Beach

During the budget discussions Thursday night, Vice Mayor Rexann Hosafros moved quickly to remove any funds dedicated to Community Police Officers on Fort Myers Beach. She's been against the idea from the beginning and had two other council members ready to back her move.

Council Raises Parking, Vacation Rental Fees

Tourists and visitors to Fort Myers Beach will be in for a little parking sticker shock in 2022. As part of the budget process Thursday night, the Fort Myers Beach Town Council raised town owned parking spaces to $5.00 per hour. The fee now is $3.00.

At the Anchorage Advisory Committee meeting this week, Fort Myers Beach Harbormaster Austin Gilchrist (pictured) reported that residents were complaining about an odor in the canal, so he investigated the stink.

On Wednesday Executive Assistant Fire Chief Ron Martin (left) was unanimously voted in as the next Fire Chief of Fort Myers Beach. He will now negotiate an employment agreement with the Fire District's attorney before taking over for Chief Matt Love, perhaps as early as next week.
